The properties work as a set, not one at a time. A balanced everyday bar of 60 percent olive, 25 percent coconut and 15 percent shea lands near hardness 37, cleansing 17, conditioning 60, with an INS around 145. That blend sits inside every recommended range at once. No single number tells you it is good; the pattern does.

Hardness and conditioning pull against each other. Hard oils tend to condition less, and the soft, conditioning oils make a softer bar, so most recipes are a negotiation between the two. A bar high in both usually leans on butters like shea or cocoa, which bring hardness without the harshness of coconut.

Cleansing is the number to watch for comfort. It comes almost entirely from lauric and myristic acids in coconut and palm kernel oil, and a value above the low twenties starts to feel stripping. A high cleansing bar is not better at washing; it is just harsher.

A high iodine value, above roughly 70, warns of a soft bar that is slow to cure and prone to the orange spots of rancidity known as DOS. Blends heavy in sunflower oil, soybean or grapeseed climb here fast, so a conditioning-looking recipe can carry a hidden shelf-life problem.

Bubbly and creamy lather describe two different feels. Bubbly is the airy foam most people picture; creamy is the dense, low, stable lather from butters and harder fats. A satisfying bar usually has some of each rather than a large amount of one.

INS is a single-number summary that correlates loosely with a good bar, with a target band in the mid-100s. Treat it as a sanity check rather than a goal, since a recipe can hit a fine INS while a specific property sits out of range.

Every property is a weighted average. Multiply each oil’s stored value by its share of the blend, add those up, and divide by the total share.

Property = sum of (oil percentage x oil’s property value) / 100.

The same formula runs for all seven outputs, using each oil’s own hardness, cleansing, conditioning, bubbly, creamy, iodine and INS figures. Nothing interacts; the blend value is simply the proportional mix of the parts.

Work the balanced example. Hardness = 0.60 x 17 + 0.25 x 79 + 0.15 x 45 = 10.2 + 19.75 + 6.75 = 36.7. Conditioning = 0.60 x 82 + 0.25 x 10 + 0.15 x 55 = 49.2 + 2.5 + 8.25 = 59.95. INS = 0.60 x 105 + 0.25 x 258 + 0.15 x 116 = 144.9. Each lands in range.

🎨 Practical examples

Each example lists the blend, the key property results, and what the soaper does about them.

1. Balanced everyday bar. Olive 60, coconut 25, shea 15. Hardness 37, cleansing 17, conditioning 60, bubbly 17, creamy 20, iodine 62, INS 145. Every value in range, a safe first recipe.

2. Pure castile. Olive 100. Hardness 17, cleansing 0, conditioning 82, iodine 85, INS 105. Soft, non-stripping, very conditioning, and out of range on hardness and cleansing on purpose. It works, but it needs a long cure and makes little lather.

3. Pure coconut bar. Coconut 100. Hardness 79, cleansing 67, conditioning 10, bubbly 67, INS 258. Extremely hard and cleansing to the point of stripping, which is why it is only usable at a high superfat.

4. Trinity plus castor. Coconut 30, olive 40, palm 25, castor 5. Hardness 43, cleansing 20, conditioning 53, bubbly 25, creamy 23, iodine 55, INS 160. A workhorse recipe that lands in range across the board.

5. Butter bar for hardness. Olive 55, coconut 25, cocoa 20. Hardness 41, conditioning 55, creamy 25, INS about 140. The cocoa butter buys firmness without pushing cleansing up.

My best-selling bar started as the trinity blend. I only added 5 percent castor after the properties tool showed my bubbly lather sitting at the bottom of its range, and that one change is what customers now mention in reviews.

6. Soft-oil blend with a hidden problem. Sunflower 50, coconut 30, shea 20. Conditioning looks lovely, but iodine comes out near 81. That iodine of 81 is above the 70 ceiling and flags a real rancidity risk. The fix is to cut the sunflower and lean on olive instead.

7. Castor overdose. Olive 50, coconut 25, castor 25. Bubbly jumps to about 39, but at 25 percent castor the bar turns soft and sticky and may never fully harden. Keep castor at or below 10 percent.

8. Substitution, palm to lard. Take the trinity bar and swap palm 25 for lard 25. Hardness moves from 43 to about 41, INS from 160 to 156, and the bar behaves almost identically. Close profiles make palm and lard easy swaps.

9. Production consistency. Lock the trinity blend at fixed percentages and every batch returns the same properties, which is what lets a seller promise the same bar month after month.

Aim to land every property in range before you worry about fine-tuning. A recipe where all seven sit inside their bands is a safe bar, and only then is it worth chasing a slightly higher lather or a firmer feel.

Control cleansing with your coconut and palm kernel share. These two carry nearly all the cleansing, so a bar that feels drying almost always has too much of one. Dropping coconut from 30 to 20 percent is the usual fix.

Save the full property set with each recipe, the oils alone are not enough. When a customer asks for something milder, the stored numbers show you which property to move and by how much.

Use butters for hardness when you want to keep the bar gentle. Shea butter and cocoa add firmness through stearic and palmitic acids without the stripping that comes from raising coconut, so a butter bar can be both hard and conditioning.

Keep an eye on iodine for shelf life. A blend heavy in sunflower, soybean or grapeseed can look conditioning while sitting above 70 iodine, which shortens how long the bar lasts before spots appear. Balance those with olive or a butter.

Add castor in small amounts for lather. Around 5 percent lifts the bubbly number without softening the bar, while more than 10 percent trades foam for a sticky, slow-hardening bar.

Treat INS as a check, not a target. Chasing a perfect INS can pull a specific property out of range, so read the seven values first and let INS confirm the overall balance.

Test a small batch before you trust the numbers on an expensive blend. The calculator ranks recipes well, but the feel of a bar also depends on cure, water and additives it does not model.

⚠️ Common mistakes to avoid

Chasing high cleansing

New soapers often read cleansing as a measure of how well soap washes and push it high, which makes a harsh, drying bar.

A cleansing value of 67 from a pure coconut bar strips skin raw at normal superfat. All soap cleans; a high cleansing number only means it also removes your skin’s own oils. Keep it in the low twenties.

Aim for cleansing between 12 and 22 and let conditioning carry the comfort of the bar.

Ignoring the iodine value

A conditioning-looking recipe can hide a high iodine number that leads to a soft bar and early rancidity.

Check iodine stays under about 70. If a soft oil pushes it over, swap some of it for olive, which conditions well while keeping iodine moderate.

Percentages that do not add to 100

Entering oils that total 90 or 110 percent skews every average, because the weighting is off.

A blend that adds to 90 percent reports properties for a recipe you are not making. Always confirm the running total hits 100 before trusting the numbers.

Fix the shares first, then read the results. The calculator will average whatever you give it, right or wrong.

Overusing castor for lather

Because castor lifts the bubbly number, it is tempting to add more for a foamier bar, but it backfires past about 10 percent.

Cap castor at 5 to 10 percent. Beyond that the bar turns soft and tacky and the extra bubbly is not worth the loss of hardness.

Treating the numbers as guarantees

The properties are estimates from fatty acid averages, not measured outcomes, and a bar’s real feel also depends on cure and water.

Use the numbers to compare and rank blends, then confirm with a test batch. Two recipes with the same hardness can still cure differently.

Forgetting that hardness and conditioning trade off

Trying to maximise both at once usually pushes one property or another out of range.

Accept the trade and use butters to soften it. A blend cannot be both extremely hard and extremely conditioning without help from shea or cocoa.

What makes a balanced soap recipe?

All seven properties sitting inside their recommended ranges at the same time. That usually means a mix of a hard oil, a cleansing oil and a conditioning oil rather than any single fat.

Should I aim for the highest conditioning?

No. Very high conditioning comes with a soft bar and a high iodine value, so the top of the range is usually better than beyond it.

A conditioning value in the 50s or 60s with an in-range hardness gives a bar that is gentle and still lasts in the shower.

Why is my bar soft even at good hardness?

Does the calculator account for superfat?

Roughly 136 to 165 is the common target band. It is a loose overall index, so treat it as confirmation rather than a goal to chase.

A recipe can hit a fine INS while a single property sits out of range, so always read the seven values first. An INS of 150 with cleansing at 40 is still a harsh bar.

Why does castor behave so differently?

Castor oil is high in ricinoleic acid, which boosts both bubbly and conditioning but adds no hardness. That unusual profile makes it a lather booster rather than a base oil.

Keep it at 5 to 10 percent. More than that and the stickiness of ricinoleic acid makes a soft, tacky bar.
