Start with the oil weight. This is the total weight of the oils in your recipe, the same number you fed your lye calculator. Fragrance is calculated on this figure, not on the finished batch, so a 1000 g oil recipe uses 1000 g as its base even though the poured batter weighs more.

Enter the fragrance load as a percentage of those oils. Three percent is a common, reliable rate for a fragrance oil in cold process. The field usually runs from 1 to about 8 percent depending on the fragrance type.

The batch figure is the number you weigh. A 3 percent load on 1000 g of oils is 30 g of fragrance. Three percent of 1000 g of oils is 30 g of fragrance. That goes in at trace for cold process, or as the base directs for melt and pour.

Per-bar fragrance grounds the abstract percentage. Thirty grams across 12 bars is 2.5 g each, which is a moderate scent that survives cure. If a test bar smells faint, the per-bar number tells you whether you dosed low or simply need to wait for the scent to settle.

The ounce-per-pound rate matters because many suppliers state usage that way. A load of 3 percent is 0.48 oz PPO, close to the half-ounce-per-pound many fragrance oils recommend. The conversion lets you follow a supplier’s guidance without switching systems.

Work the default: 1000 g of oils at 3 percent is 1000 x 0.03 = 30 g. Across 12 bars that is 30 / 12 = 2.5 g each. In oz PPO, 3 / 6.25 = 0.48. Every result comes from the one load figure.

Each example lists the oils, the load, the type and the bar count, then the grams and what the soaper does with them.

3. Lavender essential oil bar. 1000 g oils, 2.5 percent, essential oil, 12 bars. Batch 25 g, per bar 2.1 g. Lavender holds well in cold process and sits comfortably in the essential oil range.

4. Clove essential oil, safety-limited. 1000 g oils, 0.7 percent, strong essential oil, 12 bars. Batch 7 g, per bar 0.6 g. Clove at its skin limit is often under 1 percent, just 7 g in a full batch. The cap is about safety, not scent strength.

5. Melt and pour bar. 500 g base, 2 percent, melt and pour, 6 bars. Batch 10 g, per bar 1.7 g. The base holds less, so a lighter load prevents a weeping, oily surface.

6. Small test batch. 300 g oils, 4 percent, fragrance oil, 3 bars. Batch 12 g, per bar 4 g. A concentrated trial to judge a new fragrance before scaling up.

7. Converting an oz-per-pound rate. A supplier suggests 0.5 oz PPO. That is 0.5 x 6.25 = 3.125 percent, so on 1000 g of oils it is 31.25 g. The conversion lets you follow the label in grams.

I once poured a citrus bar at 6 percent thinking more scent meant longer-lasting. It smelled great wet, then half of it flashed off during cure and the bar felt harsh. Three percent with a proper anchor outlasted it easily.

8. Over-fragrancing, edge case. 1000 g oils, 10 percent, fragrance oil. Batch 100 g, well over any limit. That much scent can seize the batter, weep from the bar and irritate skin, and it wastes expensive fragrance.

Always dose on oil weight, and write the load as a percentage rather than a fixed number of grams. A percentage scales cleanly when you resize a batch, while a gram figure copied from a different batch size quietly changes the strength.

Check every fragrance against its own documentation. The chart here is a general guide, and a specific fragrance oil or essential oil may carry a lower maximum for skin, especially citrus, spice and floral absolutes.

Keep a fragrance log with the load, the batch grams and how the cured bar smelled. After a few batches you know exactly which fragrances need 5 percent to survive cure and which are strong at 3.

Anchor light or volatile scents rather than simply adding more. Citrus and some florals fade during cure, and a fixative or a small amount of a heavier note holds them better than pushing the load toward the ceiling.

Add fragrance at a light trace for cold process, and stir quickly if it is a known accelerator. Some fragrances cause acceleration, thickening the batter fast, so having your mould ready before you add scent saves a seized pour.

Treat essential oils with the same respect as fragrance oils, or more. Being natural does not make them gentle, and oils like cinnamon, clove and lemongrass have low skin limits that a 3 percent habit will exceed.

Remember that soap is a rinse-off product, which allows a higher load than a leave-on lotion, but the strong-oil caps still apply. Rinse-off status raises the ceiling; it does not remove it.

Dosing on total batch instead of oils

Calculating fragrance as a percentage of the poured batter rather than the oils overshoots the amount, because the batter includes lye and water.

Three percent of a 1430 g batter is 43 g, not the 30 g that 3 percent of 1000 g of oils gives. That mistake overdoses fragrance by about 40 percent. Always calculate on oil weight.

Ignoring IFRA limits on strong oils

Treating every essential oil as safe at a standard 3 percent overlooks that some carry much lower skin limits.

Look up the limit for spice, citrus and floral oils before dosing. Clove, cinnamon and lemongrass can need a load well under 1 percent to stay safe on skin.

Adding more scent to fix fading

When a scent fades in cure, the instinct is to raise the load, but past the limit that brings acceleration and irritation rather than staying power.

Pushing a fading citrus to 6 percent does not make it last; it makes the bar harsh and can seize the batter. Anchor the scent instead of overloading it.

Use a fixative or a heavier companion note, and keep the load inside the recommended range.

Confusing oz per pound with percentage

Reading 1 oz per pound as 1 percent understates the load by a wide margin, since 1 oz PPO is 6.25 percent.

Convert deliberately: divide the percentage by 6.25 for oz PPO, or multiply oz PPO by 6.25 for the percentage. Do not treat the two numbers as interchangeable.

Skipping the patch test

Assuming a fragrance is skin-safe because it is soap-grade skips the individual sensitivity that varies from person to person.

Test a cured bar on a small patch of skin before selling or gifting, especially with a new fragrance or a higher load.

Not accounting for melt and pour holding less

Using a cold process load in a melt and pour base leaves excess scent that weeps out as an oily film.

Keep melt and pour at 1 to 3 percent. The base cannot bind as much fragrance as a from-scratch bar.
